Gaspard Buton
I'm Gaspard Buton, a French analogue photographer currently based in Paris. Trained as a legal expert and having worked in the field of human rights, photography seemed to me to be a way of showing the world through a lens concerned with social issues. After starting as a street photographer in Latin America and France, which led to an exhibition of photographs of Paris, New York and Mexico, I turned to documentary photography. In 2022 I worked on Senegalese wrestlers in Dakar, and in 2023 on women who practice mixed martial arts. Passionate about street culture and sport, I want to question the place of certain populations, sporting disciplines and subcultures in today's world. People and their complicity remain at the heart of all my projects. It's important for me to work in partnership with my subjects on the issues I tackle, with the primary aim of highlighting these people from an angle where they are actors in the images I propose. The view I take is also meant to be naive and benevolent, in order to understand the worlds I photograph and the people involved. My next project will take place in Brazil in 2024.
